Spin-exchange interactions of spin-one bosons in optical lattices: Singlet, nematic, and dimerized phases

چکیده
We consider insulating phases of cold spin-1 bosonic particles with antiferromagnetic interactions, such as Na, in optical lattices. We show that spin-exchange interactions give rise to several distinct phases, which differ in their spin correlations. In twoand three-dimensional lattices, insulating phases with an odd number of particles per site are always nematic. For insulating states with an even number of particles per site, there is always a spin-singlet phase, and there may also be a first-order transition into the nematic phase. The nematic phase breaks spin rotational symmetry but preserves time reversal symmetry, and has gapless spin-wave excitations. The spin-singlet phase does not break spin symmetry and has a gap to all excitations. In onedimensional lattices, insulating phases with an odd number of particles per site always have a regime where translational symmetry is broken and the ground state is dimerized. We discuss signatures of various phases in Bragg scattering and time-of-flight measurements.

Spinor bosonic atoms in optical lattices: symmetry breaking and fractionalization.
We study superfluid and Mott insulator phases of cold spin-1 Bose atoms with antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice, including a usual polar condensate phase, a condensate of singlet pairs, a crystal spin nematic phase, and a spin singlet crystal phase. We suggest a possibility of exotic fractionalized phases of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and discuss them in the language of ...
متن کاملMagnetization plateaus for spin-one bosons in optical lattices: Stern-Gerlach experiments with strongly correlated atoms.
We consider insulating states of spin-one bosons in optical lattices in the presence of a weak magnetic field. For the states with more than one atom per lattice site we find a series of quantum phase transitions between states with fixed magnetization and a canted nematic phase. In the presence of a global confining potential, this unusual phase diagram leads to several novel phenomena, includ...
متن کاملQuantum entanglement of spin-1 bosons with coupled ground states in optical lattices
We examine particle entanglement, characterized by pseudo-spin squeezing, of spin-1 bosonic atoms with coupled ground states in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Both the superfluid and Mott-insulator phases are investigated separately for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. Mode entanglement is also discussed in the Mott insulating phase. The role of a small but nonzero angle be...
متن کاملExact ground states with deconfined gapless excitations for the three-leg spin-1/2 tube.
We consider a spin-1/2 tube (a three-leg ladder with periodic boundary conditions) with a Hamiltonian given by two projection operators-one on the triangles and the other on the square plaquettes on the side of the tube-that can be written in terms of Heisenberg and four-spin ring exchange interactions. We identify 3 phases: (i) for strongly antiferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, an exact...

The classical J1-J2 Heisenberg model on bipartite lattice exhibits "Neel" order. However if the AF interactions between the next nearest neighbor(nnn) are increased with respect to the nearest neighbor(nn), the frustration effect arises. In such situations, new phases such as ordered phases with coplanar or spiral ordering and disordered phases such as spin liquids can arise. In this paper we ...
